Money really matters to your team - but it’s far from the only priority.
New research by Travel Counsellors has found that nearly one in three (31%) people consider better salary and benefits a priority.
However, these really make the biggest impact when they form part of a much wider package, where employees feel their boss cares about their work, lifestyle and career growth.
What UK employees value most
As well as pay and benefits:
- 43% value a good work-life balance
- 35% prioritise flexible working hours
- 17% want a better working culture
- 16% are looking for improved personal development opportunities
It’s clear from the findings that people want and expect much more than just a generous pay packet.
They want the kind of support and working environment that genuinely helps them in their day-to-day lives.
What makes people stay in their job?
Feeling supported at work can make a big difference to employee retention.
After all, if people are getting the flexibility, balance, culture and sense of growth that they crave, they’ll be less likely to move elsewhere.
Almost half (43%) of those polled said they’re looking at quitting their job in the next year, and over one in four (27%) revealed they’re currently looking at what roles are available.
But it’s not guaranteed that these people will hand in their notice.
Employers just need to give them a compelling reason to stay.
Nearly half (45%) of those who plan to stay in their current role over the next year say it’s largely because they enjoy their work culture and being with their colleagues.
That’s not to say they’re not ambitious, as one in five (20%) career progression is their top priority when looking for a new role.
But it’s apparent that employers need to strike the right balance between creating a good environment that keeps people in place, yet still gives them opportunities to progress.
